SEEN & NOTED: LAS VEGAS, NV - DIGITAL SIGNAGE EXPO — Three standout examples from this year's APEX Award entries include an interactive media installation for the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery (pictured above) created by Zebra Dog, a Wisconsin-based visual branding and multimedia design firm, which took top honors winning both a Gold APEX Award in the Education and Healthcare category as well as being honored with Digital Signage Expo's first APEX of the Year Award. Benetton's Live Windows project created by Fabrica took home a Gold APEX Award in the Retail category, and finally Sun Life Financial won an APEX Gold Award for the Sun Life Financial BuzzWall™ created by Arsenal Media.
The Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery (WID) opened in December 2010 and brings together scientists and researchers from a broad spectrum of disciplines in a world-class biomedical research institute facility. The facility houses twin interdisciplinary research institutes: the Morgridge Institute for Research, a private, not-for-profit research institute dedicated to improving human health by accelerating scientific discovery to patient delivery; and the public Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, which is part of University of Wisconsin–Madison organized under its graduate school.
One of the really great things about the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery's project is that it really shows just how great a digital signage installation can be when all of the stakeholders come together and pool their knowledge and passion.
The project was a collaborative effort that brought together Zebra Dog for content creation and production. Float4, a Montreal-based interactive developer for the gesture-based user interface; and with Sensory Interactive, a project consultant and with audiovisual integration provided by R2W. This team worked with the architects and engineers at WID to create a multilayered interactive video wall experience that has been called "the jewel of the building.”
