SEEN & NOTED: UNITED KINGDOM — A new digital out-of-home network is starting to take shape around London's financial district. Media Metrica Ltd, a UK-based company has launched a network of blast-mitigated recycling receptacles called Renew. Each Renew receptacle includes two 32-inch sun-light readable, adaptive brightness LCD panels that broadcast real-time financial and entertainment information while also providing a much need service—recycling.
Renew's digital signage network is launching with an initial 50 screens with plans to rollout as many as 200 screens by the 2012 London Olympics. Renew's recycling receptacles are made from a bomb-proof material that's 4 times stronger than steel. London has had a long history of bombings that include attacks by the IRA, as well as the recent terrorist attacks in 2005. Renew expects each receptacle to collect 1.5 tons per year of recyclable material. The network's adaptive brightness screens will also reduce power usage by approximately 40% adding to Renew’s environmental footprint.
Media Metrica has assembled an editorial team for the Renew network that follows events and breaking news as it happens. Renew's digital signage network provides a broad range of content that includes financial news from the London Stock Exchange and Bloomberg. Entertainment and general news content partners include Agence France Presse, The Economist, Getty Images, Time Out, Square Meal, Car Magazine, ESPN and Wallpaper. The information published on the screens will be scheduled according to location and time of day. Renew's system is also capable of delivering instant messages directly from emergency services across the entire network in the event of a major transport disruption or a civil emergency. During 2012, Renew will also roll-out enhanced wireless connectivity throughout their network, providing additional interactive capabilities between each receptacle and mobile devices.
In addition to Media Metrica's London contract, Renew was recently approved by the Downtown Alliance for Lower Manhattan to showcase their first receptacle in front of the New York Stock Exchange this Spring. Plans are also in the works to rollout additional Renew networks in Japan's transportation system and with various real estate owners in Singapore. Media Metrica's contract to run London's Renew network runs through 2032.
