SEEN & NOTED: KITCHENER, CANADA – The Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario has just marked a major expansion with the opening of The Stephen Hawking Centre this past September, more than doubling the size of their research facility. The Perimeter Institute is devoted to cutting-edge scientific research, training, and outreach in theoretical physics and is one of the largest institutions of its kind in the world. The goal of the new state-of-the-art research complex is to advance scientific progress by providing the ultimate environment for researchers to conceive, visualize, and understand the nature of physical reality, from the subatomic world to the entire universe.
The Stephen Hawking Centre was designed by Teeple Architects of Toronto. Their design strategy focused on creating the ideal space for research that includes quiet spaces for contemplative thought which are balanced with spaces that facilitate interaction. The expansion added 55,000 additional square feet increasing the total size of Perimeter Institute to 120,000 square feet and adding space for more than 150 new researchers. It was paramount to the design that the expansion be contiguous with the existing facility to function as a singular whole.
One of the new features at the facility is a dynamic digital signage media wall located in the Stephen Hawking Centre's lobby which welcomes and informs visitors. The media wall uses an array of 84 Christie MicroTiles arranged in an irregular hexagonal shape that matches the architectural angles of the environment.
“The wall’s design is a fusion of messaging, mission and architecture – and it all came together because of the Christie's technology,” said John Matlock, Director of External Relations and Public Affairs at Perimeter Institute. “The unique shape of the media wall, including a functioning passageway, is in line with the architect’s vision of the main entrance to Perimeter Institute.”
