SEEN & NOTED: LAS VEGAS, NV — In 2007, McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas embarked upon its most ambitious project to date—the construction of a new 1.9 million-square-foot, $2.4 billion terminal that hosts more than 41 million travelers each year for both international and domestic flights. After five years of construction, McCarran’s Terminal #3 (T3) opened earlier this year. The new terminal includes 14 gates, seven of which are dedicated to international flights.
With large number of travelers filling McCarran Airport each day, getting people to the right place at the right time can be a daunting task. In addition to flight arrival and departure times, the airport needed to provide visitors with information on baggage and gates, direction on how to get from one section of the airport to another (wayfinding) and directories with information on local places of business and points of interest.
McCarran International Airport's digital signage systems were deployed by NEC Displays and Four Winds Interactive, a digital content management company. Four Winds provided the software and created the interactive airport directories and dynamic gate information displays using double-sided video walls outside each arrival and departure gate (pictured below). The final digital signage deployment used more than 900 NEC large-screen displays that included 182 46-inch model P461s and 723 40-inch model P401s displays. Each gate's display includes real-time flight information, weather forecasts and iconic photos of travel destinations.
Through the digital wayfinding displays, travelers are able to easily find information about shopping, dining, airport clubs and other airport amenities. A “map it” feature enables travelers to see an animated visual route from their current location to their destination as well as turn-by-turn directions. The directions can then be easily sent from the interactive display to the travelers’ smartphones using a QR code.
